Is It Time for an AC Replacement?

Everything around us is exposed to wear and tear. Your favorite black shirt eventually fades, turning gray as you wear it daily. Your iPhone 14 may become obsolete with newer models to be released soon. True, nothing in this world lasts forever. And the same applies to your air conditioner.

Over time, your air conditioning system may encounter sudden breakdowns. While some of these instances can be resolved with minor repairs, others require major components or a complete system replacement. But when can you say it’s due for a replacement and not just a repair? Here are some signs to take note of:

1. It no longer blows cold air.

If your air conditioner does not blow cool air, there are a number of reasons that cause this. Some minor, and some major.  If you find yourself in this situation, call a licensed HVAC contractor who can help diagnose the root of the problem.

Now, if the HVAC contractor says major repairs need to be done, then you may want to consider having your air conditioner replaced instead.

2. It’s not blowing the same amount of air it used to.

Your air conditioning system may be blowing cool air for your home, but you notice it’s not pushing the same amount of air it used to. This may indicate system leaks, issues in the major components of your system, or duct work problems.

We always recommend a professional to handle these repairs – but the costs can be expensive, especially if your unit has not been properly maintained over the years.

Again, when the costs seem too high, consider investing in a complete AC replacement.

3. There are leaks around the unit.

Condensation is normal for air conditioners. But if you notice excessive leaks around it, there may be a more serious problem.

If large pools of water form around your air conditioner, contact an HVAC specialist immediately. Leaking coolant can be a serious health risk to you and your family. Water pools around the air conditioner can also serve as a breeding ground for bacteria and mold.

And if the problem is too complicated to fix, getting an AC replacement might be the best option.

4. You hear strange sounds from your air conditioning unit.

Do you hear strange grinding sounds from your air conditioner? How about rattling and banging noises from your system that seem odd?

All these noises may suggest an issue. It is possible that the belt slipped out of place or the motor bearings may have been broken. These two scenarios could require a more expensive repair or a complete replacement if not addressed immediately.

5. The thermostat is broken.

Sometimes, the problem is not the main cooling unit but the thermostat itself. A broken thermostat can keep your air conditioner from effectively cooling your home.

If you notice other rooms are cool, the issue may be contained in one room. A professional can check the thermostat to see if it is the culprit. If you are lucky, the thermostat will just have to be replaced. Otherwise, you may need to replace the whole unit.

6. Your air conditioning unit has been with you for over a decade.

On average, an AC system lasts up to 10 years with proper maintenance. And if it lasts longer, consider yourself lucky as you have received a great return on investment!

When your 10+ year old air conditioning system breaks down, consider investing in a new one. Older systems likely won’t last much longer, so investing more money into them just to patch the issue for another year, maybe two, could be money down the drain. Plus, the latest models are more energy-efficient.

7. Your AC system has undergone many repairs.

If you have been paying for frequent AC repair services already, it may be time to move on and invest in a new air conditioning system. Don’t wait for more costly repairs.
