Basic AC Maintenance Checklist
1, 2,3… MAINTAIN!
Maintaining the condition of you’re A/C unit during off peak season is just as important as maintaining it during those hot summer months. With just a few tips, you can save yourself some money, time and the future hassle of repair bills.
-
The filter – The easiest thing that can be done to ensure the maintenance of your A/C unit is to change out the filter. A filter that is not change regularly causes the unit to work harder and use more energy resulting in a higher energy bill and not so clean air. Changing your filter should happen every other month.
-
Clean the compressor – Outdoor compressors are built to withstand most of weather’s tricks. That being said, it is still important to ensure that maintenance on your A/C compressor is still completed. Make sure that all twigs, leaves, pine cones, etc. are cleared and not caught in the unit. All landscaping should be a minimum of 3 feet away and all bushes surrounding the compressor should be trimmed back. Take a hose and lightly give you’re unit a good spray down. This will also ensure good airflow.
-
Clean the coils – Another fairly easy item that if maintained properly, can prevent your system from working harder are the coils. Take a broom or nylon brush and thoroughly clean the coils, once that are complete, take a hose and rinse all remaining debris.
-
Set your Thermostat – By setting your thermostat to a temperature slightly higher than the average temperature in your home, you lower your energy and reduced strain on you’re A/C unit. Newer thermostats allow for you’re to lower the temperature from your smart phone, or computer allowing you to come home to a cool house.
